Cloves, also termed as “laung” in Hindi are the flowering buds of trees belonging to Myrtaceae family. It has its origin traced back to Indonesia in the Maluku islands. They are a popular Indian spice and are harvested all around the year in different parts of the world. Cloves are an important ingredient in the cuisines of Asian, African, Mediterranean and middle east countries. It is popularly used in adding flavor to marinades, curries and meats. Hot dishes are given flavor and aroma with the addition of cloves. They are often combined with sugar and lemon to add in the dishes.
In Indonesia, it is added in kretek, a type of cigarette to give flavor and aroma. Cigarettes made up of cloves are widely smoked up in different parts of Asia, Europe and in the United States. Cloves are also used as an ant repellent due to the bioactive chemicals present in them. It also can be a natural fragrant pomander when used with orange.
Clove is used in the effective treatment of toothaches and several other types of pain. It also plays the role of mosquito repellent and helps in the reduction of fever. Studies need to be done to effectively prove that clove can also reduce blood sugar levels in an Individual.
